Walking Tour of Herculaneum

A walking tour of the archeological site of Herculaneum was on today’s agenda. Closer to Mount Vesuvius than Pompeii, Herculaneum was perfectly preserved under ~15 metres of volcanic mud.

We entered the settlement via the beach, now ~15 metres below ground level, where the skeletons of 300+ people were found. Men on the beach, women and children in the niches on the dock.

So much of Herculaneum has been preserved. The frescoes and mosaics are beautiful and in full colour, much of the wood (carbonised) used for staircases and second floor floorboards are intact, there’s even an amphitheatre sitting underneath the current town’s infrastructure.

A place that needs to be experienced to understand the scale of what happened all those years ago. And a terrifying prediction of what’s to come when Vesuvio decides enough is enough.

The final photograph shows just how large Mount Vesuvius was in comparison to Vesuvio.
